Vulcanising

Choose any SEVEN of the questions below and answer them in full sentences. ONE of your selections must be either Q5 or Q10. It would be beneficial if you chose BOTH of these however. Note that each question links directly to the given page number in the novel.

  • 1. p. 60 - Why didn't Elliot "know who he was?"
  • 2. p. 61 - Why do you think that Catalina was really upset? Was it the note, or what Russell thought about it?
  • 3. p. 62 - What three injuries has Elliot sustained after the incident that occurred in the last chapter?
  • 4. p. 63 - Why does Russell's mother say that Elliot is "lucky?"
  • 5. p. 64 - Read the last line of the page. Why does Catalina want to persist with the plan/experiment?
  • 6. p. 65 - Catalina says that "pure scientists pretty much focus on understanding things." Do you think that the trio will ever understand why they are singled out all the time? Why?
  • 7. p. 66 - Explain the significance/symbolism of the "rubber" story? What lesson does it teach Russell?
  • 8. p. 67 - Why does Russell's mother suggest that Bethany DeMere would be threatened by Catalina? Do you agree? Why/Not?
  • 9. p. 68 - Read the last line of the chapter. What "part" did Russell get?
  • 10. ALL - Vulcanising is the process of converting rubber to a more durable substance. Think about the expression "I am rubber ... You are glue ..." Do you think that the author has done this on purpose? Why/Not?
